S&P 500

A stock market index made up of about 500 large U.S. companies. It is widely used to describe how the U.S. stock market as a whole is doing.

Why does it matter?

StockLab covers the companies in the S&P 500, plus some Brazilian companies traded in New York, and uses the index to calculate Beta.

How do I read it?

Being in the index means a company is large and listed in the U.S. It is not a quality rating or a recommendation.

Example

Apple, Microsoft and NVIDIA each make up a much larger part of the S&P 500 than its smallest members, so a 1% move in one of them moves the index far more.

On StockLab

Every U.S. company on StockLab is in the S&P 500, and Beta compares each share with a fund that follows the index.
